Sound in Film

Once upon a time in the west

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
In this sequence the sound is very calm and quiet, its the small sounds the everyday sounds that   seem so loud and strong this is what I think is so great about this opening scene , all the ambient and background sound  is pushed to the forefront and is made to seem so big for example the fly being caught in the gun. There is a an room tone for example at the very begging of the opening sequience there is a sort of just atmosphere sound which create a mood for the scene.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
The sound is creating a mood by using room tone atmosphere sound to create a sense of something about to happen the quiet spaced out sounds created a sense of something about to come. Even when the  cowboy is walking through the bar and there is a close up of his face there is juts atmosphere room tone sounds nothing dramatic and in a way this creates tension and makes the audience feel un easy there is hardly any sound and this is what creates a mood and a sort of tension. The contrast between the fly being trapped in the gun and the buzzing sound getting loader as the fly is increasingly panicking and as the man listenings closer to the gun and than the massive loud burst of sound of the training pulling up at the station it is great to see how the power of such everyday things can be so powerful when used against each other.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect to create a sense of uneasiness and anxiety for the audience the sounds are so subtle and so quiet that the opening sequence communicates something is not all what it seems as tough a showdown will happen,

   Star Wars Empire Strikes Back

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is communicating a struggle a fight between good and bad. its the sound of all the typical sci fi sounds the engine working etc that communicate a world beyond our won its all these realistic sounds that create world beyond our own.
How the sound is doing this, referring to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating a world beyond our own by using sound perspective, the star wards team have created a space in which sound is able to sound far away or near and this makes the sounds seem real like the are really in the space. The lighsabers have a massive effect on the sound on this sequence especially when both lightsabers hit each other this create a sound which could be a foley sound of sparks being made. The lightsabers sound is explained here: ``The lightsaber sound effect was developed by sound designer Ben Burtt as a combination of the hum of idling interlock motors in aged movie projectors and interference caused by a television set on an unshielded microphone. Burtt discovered the latter accidentally as he was looking for a buzzing, sparkling sound to add to the projector motor hum.[3]
The pitch changes of lightsaber movement were produced by playing the basic lightsaber tone on a loudspeaker and recording it on a moving microphone, generatingDoppler shift to mimic a moving sound source.'' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw.
what do you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer wanted to create a world/universe beyond our own a fantasy sci-fi world that people could dive into and believable more than anything I think the sound designer wanted to make the sounds work with the visuals to create a convincing world.

    Matrix

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is creating a convincing film reality  we as the audience believe that we trinity is really fighting the police all the sounds although are not real our world i the film world the sound seems believable.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating an convincing film reality for example when trinity kicks the police officer into the wall and the police officer he hits he wall with a sort of concrete craking sound this could of been done by using foley sound of throwing something hard at a concert wall and recording the moment when the object hits the wall.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer wanted to create a believable realistic sound that people are abel to believe. the sound in this movie is so well connected to the visuals for example when Trinity or neo slow down the sound does the some thing the sound is slowed Down and stretched out for as long as the character is moving the sound is connected with the character, and this is what i think the character inteded to do he wanted to sound to be well connected with the visuals so that people would question the sound, it would juts be a normal thing

Kill Bill- gogo

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is creating a strong film realism.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating a strong film realism by the use of stretched out sound for example when uma jumps from table to table there is a stretched out ballon like sound it is not a sound that is we would hear in real life but because the sound in this film uses spatial placement and sound perspective the sound seem very really and believable.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer and director wanted to create this particular effect as to show and emphases the struggle that the bride is going through to get the revenge she so desperately seeks for example when the sword hits gogos meteor hammer the sound of the clash is a loud metal scraping sort of sound. The sound in this scenes are vicious, loud and bold and this sums up this film.

express yourself!!!

                                              Contrast (Color, Tone & Saturation)

I took this picture a cople of years ago, I ws getting ready to go out and decided to take the picture from the view of my front door. I love the colour contrast of this image. I love how the sky is a pink orange colour and the fklats below it are so darl that it almost looks silouhteed. I think the delicate colours of thhe skly and the harsh darkiness of the falts bekow it really give structure to this picture. nornally when I think of contrast I think of bold coloyrs clashing with eachother for edample blood red with picth balck but I like the sft clours in the skyu hitting the darksness of the falts.

I took this picture while on holiday, Its just a normal sunset picture but I love how the suns colour seems to brun thriugh the sky and the clours loosely mixes in with the white clouds. I class this as clours contrast because of the near white clour at the top of the image ans the biuring image of the sun blazes thright the middle of the image, if the sky was pink like my above image with this iamge of the sun it wiuld oprobally not be colour cntrast because the clouyrs of the sun but becaus ethe clousd arund the sun are so cool the sun really burst thriugh the puicture the clouds aroiusnd the sun actaully frame the sun.

                                                           Portrait

I do not have many portraits of myself as I dont really like images of myself, I did find this image of me on holdiday in Italy alst year. I  like this image becaus eit communiactes that im happy not juts by my smile but the settingng by the pool side the light piouring in from my right side my posistion it shows that im relaxed abnd happy. I like the saturated colour blue me the blues are really bright and because the concrete is a dull grey it makes the blue look really saturated and bright. The only other colour that stands out just as much as the blue saturated is the warm glowy colour of my skin.

Line (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, perspective lines)
I took this image while living in singapore, this is one of the flat buildings that my family and I were living in. I love the lines in this image there are two types of lines in this image, there is a vertical lines in the detail of the flat buolding goimg straight up and there are horizontal oines going across. I think this is a simple image yet I think because if the stong vertical and horizontal lines give this image complex form. I like the fact that there are reflections in this picture, this creates double horizontal lines.

I took this image while living in singapore, this is a side of the pool at night. I remember kneeling on the floor and taking the picture trying to get the lines exactlky just right.I like the vertical line at the left side of the page and the fcat that it is a light really nrings your attanetion to this side of the page. I love how the light line seems to really fade away into the end of the picture. it was the fact that I lent down that i was able to make this picture while
I took this image while living in singapore, I took this inside one of the shooping malls its the top of the mall and I jiust throight it was amazing unlike anything I had ever seen, very detailed and intricate. I love the fact that there are vertical, horizontal and diganla lines, it brings a string form to the mage and the lights make it look as tough it you are looking at the sky at night it is such a simple yet effective buoding, the lights seem to be paced at ether th end or the beggine of each diagnal horxatal or vertical line
I took this image while in new york this is the flatirin bulidng in Manhattan. I was really fascinated by the bukding it is such a werid yet winderful desgin. I love the rush and calmness in the pictureI think the blurry red light inn the cornerer brings a sense of a rush a zsencse if ciuty life etr the green tree behind it brings sense of calm and city and nture meshng togetger co excisting. I love the verticak lines iof the flat iron building its a nice formation the bulding becaus eof its string deisgn demonates the picture.

I took this image while living in singapore, we want trhrough ine of the markets and at the end of the market was a temple. this pictire is from a garden at the back of the temple. I love the vibrancy or the red in this oicture it really stands out abnd pousese you to look at the the strictire of the oictire which is created by the string mini colums. and the vertical and horizontal lines a the left side of the page. it is because the vower is so close to the image this makes the image have perspective lines.

Analyze Shot Of A Favorite Artist

I like this image of lana Del rey it shows the diffrence in emotions that she has or may be feeling. due to the two image sbeing oiver each other maybe it is a sign of combfkiction in emeotion. for example one image she has her head down maybe commmucayig that she is sad that she wanst to be aklone or that she is thinkinhg or remembering something. the siend  image she is like she is triwiung her hair back her mouth is mouth is open she looks a lot more care free and happy.

this is the single cover for her single born to die, I think having the Amercican falg in the bakcground could represent the ameiucan dream, the white oicket fence the hiuse the family tye stray at hine mother abd then fior kana dek ray and her biyfried to fkrst be topless and then for the boufriebd to not look convention ge looks more like a rebel going aginst what tyoicla amaercican mebn lok like could reoresnet the the amerucan dream is nit a reality is not real or that the amerucan dream has changed.

Motion Blur

I tok th8is pictire inside my room I have a coilleg on my room and I move the camera when i took the picutyer, I love how the cooloyr opos oput of this image. I realsixed that staeri8ng at thius image showed me that the main clour that opos out is white Inthink it is because the manu bajcgriund clour is hwite. I like how the image looks as tough someone wiped their hand across the image.
I have lughts in my room that habd from the ceiling, I tok this image by soing around when I took the picture. I like how the lights at the end of the oink cable look really brught orange. in reall life the lighst are quite dull pink I like how the oirageyh ligtr has reflected onto the reast if the wallm. whihc has therefire nrighten the whole room and therefore brighten the image as a whole.

 Football
When we first started this task I didnt reakky know what I was meant to do and how I was meant to do it. I statred to get into the task quite quickly and alotogh I took quite a lot of images, most of them were blurry or were nit the right image I was lokimg for. I fund that I was not focusubng the camera oroperly and threreore my image didnt cine oyt right. However lookmg thriught the shoots I really kliked this one. the main thing I really like is that is lok reall you can see movement in this image. you can imagine the coach and wht hge is diung in this image. I like how the light refkects in his back and how the red, brown and balc of his jumoaer all compliment each other. one thing I would of changhed abit this imahe would of been to make as not as blurry.

LENS CULTURE

Forceful, strong, worldly.
This picture resinates with me as it is a image that communicates so much with something that is so basic so simple. Compared to the other elements wind is not something that people associate with Strength but this image shows wind at its most powerful at its most authoritative. Looking at this photo it takes me out of my comfort zone its worldly and shows that the world is so much bigger them the people in it.

In a time where America had lost not only a president man but someone who has resinated to with so many people across that nation. This photo was take at 1964 in a time where racism was rift ad was a daily norm for african Americans and many other minorities alike. This photo makes me feel emotional it shows how one man was able to affect so many people in such a string and positive way people from all walks of life came to say one final goodbye, its the time where a nation came to mourn and come together. I like the fcat that this image was taken from above

Tate Visit

Guy Tillim a mention – there are just a few weeks left to check out a selection of works from his Congo Democratic series, as part of the Tate Modern collection display ‘New Documentary Forms’. The series examines the 2006 multi-party presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which followed decades of civil war, and, unsurprisingly, became the hotly-contested focus of the electorate’s hopes and fears for the future.

Light

the first image we used a red head, the read head was placed above my head and all the light were turned of this created and edge and rim light image, my whole face is black out it is just the outline of my head and shoulders that people can see. i like this image because it is a strong effective bold image, this still image can tell us a lot about someones emotional state. The second image has got a key light on the right side of my face this light the right side of my face but leaves the left side completely in the dark this creates a half lit face this is good to communicate someone who has a dark side. The last image is done by having the whole place in the dark a fill light underneath Linda's head, Linda's head is lowered so that the fill light is gently and warmly lighting the left side of her face and her right side gradually goes into the dark. I like this image because it is quite a soft image to compare with the two above.

E4sting Alpha and Omega

When I first heard that we were going to be doing a motion graphics project, I was really worried I dreaded the thought of working on computers for lengthy times. I hated working with computers and did not think that I would do very well in this particular project. However over the last couple of weeks I have learnt a tremendous amount of thing that is I knew nothing about 4 weeks ago. I know feel that I have a sustainable knowledge of motion and can take this skill to a future job.
After getting over the thought of working in computers for several weeks, I started to look forward to creating a E4 sting. E4 stings where something that I was familiar with and I wanted to see how far I could push myself to create something on motion with absolutely no knowledge of how motion worked.  I started to write down all my ideas for my E4 sting I either wrote them down while I was at college of if I was at home and an Idea came to me I would jot it down, overall I had around 13 ideas some I liked more than others. When we then told to whittle our ideas to just three, I initially found it quite hard I liked all my ideas but as I started to look at my ideas properly seeing if they were realistic, matching the brief and the simplicity. I was easier to pick out the three looking through the three I picked; I knew which one I really wanted to create. It was going to be a homemade video of a dog sneezing and just as the dog sneezing the E4 will come flying out of his nostrils and hit the screen will the sound of slap as hits the screen, then the E4 will slide of the screen like a oozy bogey. I really loved this idea simply because I thought it hit the E4 brief criteria so well and in so many ways, I also loved the simplicity of it and how I could tweak it to make it even more defined more realistic. I started searching for videos of dogs sneezing on YouTube luckily there were quite a few but once I started to watch these videos either the video was just really bad quality the dogs was sneezing with their head right down, or the dog was moving too much. However after much searching I found a video that matched my criteria exactly, the video was of a corgi puppy sneezing repeatedly , I was really fond of this video but my tutor asked me to get another video of a dog sneezing just as back up. Luckily I found a bicheon fries puppy sneezing which was a brilliant piece of video and just like my other video fitted the criteria perfectly. I went home and converted the files to MP4 and then downloaded it onto my usb. I brang it in the next day and wanted to see what I could do on motion I had no idea what I was doing I didn’t even know how to drag the video into canvas. However before we started working on our video we had to learn how to turn the E4 from 2D to 3D, we were shown by our tutor and then were given a sheet which gave us instructions on how to create the 3D E4. After several attempts I just couldn’t turn my E4 3D and I started to get really frustrated I think it was because I thought if I can do the first simple stage turn my E4 3D then how am I going to create a E4 sting using motion. I asked a few people in my class how they were getting their E4’s 3D and a lot of people where very helpful and after a short while I was able to turn my E4 3D. Our tutor showed us a video which he had made, it was a video of an E4 moving around in busy New York this lead to us learning about motion paths each of us were asked to create our own motion paths, and surprisingly I found this section quite easily I liked the freedom that you had when creating a motion path how you could move the E4 where ever you wanted.  After learning about several things we could do on motion EG lights, key frame editor and sound. We were now able to work on our own E4 stings, I decided to pick the video with the bicheon fries puppy, as the corgi puppy was to erratic to fast I couldn’t see how I was going to use it the video so I didn’t use the corgi puppy  sneeze video. I knew how I wanted my video to look but I just couldn’t make it happened. Anthony a member of the media staff came in to our class and I asked him for some help, he went through a lot with me and practically completed my video in less than 5 minutes. I was so happy at how it looked my video of the dog sneezing was completed or so I thought. When I showed my tutor he was not as pleased as I was and understandably too, the video was none of my work I had no idea how Anthony had done it I just sat there nodding my head. My tutor asked me to erase everything that Anthony had done and for me to complete the work myself. I was a bit upset that everything Anthony had done had gone to waste and more upset that I had no clue how Anthony had done what he had done. As I backspaced all of Anthony’s worked I slowly realised that what he had done wasn’t overly complicated, I had the main ingredients the E4 and the video of the dog sneezing all I had to do was put them together create my E4 dog sneeze. Over the next few days I experimented made a few mistakes but at the end I had my finished product I had my E4 dog sneeze and I was proud that I did it myself. My tutor decided to call a meeting in which him and a fellow class member would analyse criticise and give helpful feedback to each E4 sting we created, I was really proud of my work so I was happy to go up and I didn’t really think there was anything wrong with it. However after I watched it with my tutor and a class member I started to see a floor and this floor was confirmed but my tutor, the dog in my video was sneezing down so when the E4 came flying out of his nose it did not look right, the dog was sneezing down and the E4 came flying up my tutor and I agreed it was very realistic it didn’t look as though it was coming out of his nose. A class mate and my tutor tried to give me ideas of how I could continue to use the dog sneezing video but in a different way, but by the end of the meeting we all decided that because dogs sneeze down it was be very unreality to have something fly out of their noses and hit the screen so I decided to look for a new video. I was extremely disappointed and upset I thought my E4 sting was a good idea but I had to realise that it was not going to work. I went back to the drawing board and looked at my original ideas scanning through them, I only really like one it was to have a rocket fly to a purple planet and when the camera pans out the rocket is actually on top of the E4 sign, so it stating that E4 is out of this world E4 is big and grand and is a world of its own.  I loved this idea but it was very complicated something that I knew I would not be able to do on my own. I had just about made an E4 fly out of a dog’s nose I do not think I could create an E4 planet. I left that idea behind and while scanning videos on YouTube while in college I started to think about the theme grandness, boldness and then I thought what’s bold and strong. The wonders of the world all these ancient historical wonders have withstood the length of time and are still in tacked what is more grand than that. I looked through videos of the Great Wall of China, Christ the redeemer in Brazil and the coliseum in Rome but none matched what I was looking for. As I was typing wonders of the world the great pyramids of Giza came up and after clicking on various videos I came across:    link:                               It was exactly what I was looking for. Seeing a video of a tourist travelling to see the Egyptian pyramids, I knew that I wanted to use it for my E4 sting but after downloading the video I had no idea what or how I was going to use this video to create a cool E4 sting. My first idea was to have the 3D E4 come down from the top of the video and land right on the top of the pyramid I wanted to have it wobble and then fall of. Once I got the E4 to land on top of pyramid I thought that if the E4 just falls of not only will that make my E4 sting boring but it doesn’t communicate the brand identity at all. I wanted to create a E4 sting that really reflected the brand identity of E4, so I started to think about what words came to mind when I thought about E4 and one word that kept coming up was addictive, I feel that E4 is very addictive the shows that they put on really relate to their target audience and I know on first account how easy it is to sit down and just watch show after show on E4. The word addictive kept coming up and so I decided to use the E4 colour purple in my E4 sting, I wanted to have the pyramids turn purple as soon as the E4 touched the top of it. In my E4 sting, E4 is like a big invader coming down to take over the world and turn everything it touches purple , in my E4 string once E4 touches something it turns purple therefore making it part of the E4 brand, part of the E4 family. I also wanted to communicate the grandness of E4. By comparing it to the great pyramids of Egypt, I am showing how big E4 is. The pyramids are ancient they are a massive part of history they are part of one of the wonders of the world. I feel that comparing that with the cheekiness and fun of E4 brings certain boldness to my E4 sting. I feel that having a low fi video makes the E4 look more prominent and strong and therefore reinforces the grandness of the E4. As I was getting carried away making my E4 sting, I started experimenting after I had successfully made my E4 come down onto the top of the pyramid and turn it purple I decided I wanted to make it jump to the next pyramid and turn that pyramid purple too, while having two mini E4s jumping at the forefront of the video. Doing all of that was going to be a challenge I had to create a motion path, replicate the motion path and an affect so that when the E4 landed it had a cloud of smoke, change the points to linear or bizear so that he jump from one pyramid to the next looked realistic. However with the help from peers in my class, experimenting and help from my tutor I completed my finished E4 sting. Looking back now I’m glad that I didn’t just finish with the dog sneezing, it was too easy and I didn’t push myself, I look at pyramid E4 sting and it has so much going and I am happy that I pushed myself to create the best E4 sting that I could produce.

I GOT THE SWAG AND ITS PUMPING OUT MY OVARIES

Gucci Gucci, Louie  Louie, Fendi Fendi, Prada.

What, Less than a a year ago, we or at least I did not know who she was. Now she has exploded onto the scence, at least the mainstream scence. Kreayshawn has actually been on the underaground scence for quite a long time. But it wasnt until she spit out Gucci Gucci that people sat up. Being nominated for MTVSbest newcomer. I for one am so pumped ( yes I said pumped ) for her next tune.

BARE FACED

Its taken me ages to really get into makeup and fashion. I think because I spent most of my early teens working with horses. Not that they are to blame, ( I love horses). But when I stoped working with horses I was 16 and I had no idea where to start or what I even liked especially when it came to fashion. So in the last year my fashion I would say has picked, up I'm still learning new things isn't everyone, but on the whole I am happy with where I am. Makeup, now that has been the challenge. Not items like eyeliner or blusher, but getting things like foundation and powder right hasn't been so successful. I tried loads of different makeup companies, but no luck. So juts when I'm about to give up in the mist of disaster pops up bare minerals and ladies and gents I have never looked back, its so light but definatly gives me the cover that I really need. so guys check em out.
