Sound in Film

Once upon a time in the west

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
In this sequence the sound is very calm and quiet, its the small sounds the everyday sounds that   seem so loud and strong this is what I think is so great about this opening scene , all the ambient and background sound  is pushed to the forefront and is made to seem so big for example the fly being caught in the gun. There is a an room tone for example at the very begging of the opening sequience there is a sort of just atmosphere sound which create a mood for the scene.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
The sound is creating a mood by using room tone atmosphere sound to create a sense of something about to happen the quiet spaced out sounds created a sense of something about to come. Even when the  cowboy is walking through the bar and there is a close up of his face there is juts atmosphere room tone sounds nothing dramatic and in a way this creates tension and makes the audience feel un easy there is hardly any sound and this is what creates a mood and a sort of tension. The contrast between the fly being trapped in the gun and the buzzing sound getting loader as the fly is increasingly panicking and as the man listenings closer to the gun and than the massive loud burst of sound of the training pulling up at the station it is great to see how the power of such everyday things can be so powerful when used against each other.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect to create a sense of uneasiness and anxiety for the audience the sounds are so subtle and so quiet that the opening sequence communicates something is not all what it seems as tough a showdown will happen,

   Star Wars Empire Strikes Back

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is communicating a struggle a fight between good and bad. its the sound of all the typical sci fi sounds the engine working etc that communicate a world beyond our won its all these realistic sounds that create world beyond our own.
How the sound is doing this, referring to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating a world beyond our own by using sound perspective, the star wards team have created a space in which sound is able to sound far away or near and this makes the sounds seem real like the are really in the space. The lighsabers have a massive effect on the sound on this sequence especially when both lightsabers hit each other this create a sound which could be a foley sound of sparks being made. The lightsabers sound is explained here: ``The lightsaber sound effect was developed by sound designer Ben Burtt as a combination of the hum of idling interlock motors in aged movie projectors and interference caused by a television set on an unshielded microphone. Burtt discovered the latter accidentally as he was looking for a buzzing, sparkling sound to add to the projector motor hum.[3]
The pitch changes of lightsaber movement were produced by playing the basic lightsaber tone on a loudspeaker and recording it on a moving microphone, generatingDoppler shift to mimic a moving sound source.'' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw.
what do you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer wanted to create a world/universe beyond our own a fantasy sci-fi world that people could dive into and believable more than anything I think the sound designer wanted to make the sounds work with the visuals to create a convincing world.

    Matrix

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is creating a convincing film reality  we as the audience believe that we trinity is really fighting the police all the sounds although are not real our world i the film world the sound seems believable.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating an convincing film reality for example when trinity kicks the police officer into the wall and the police officer he hits he wall with a sort of concrete craking sound this could of been done by using foley sound of throwing something hard at a concert wall and recording the moment when the object hits the wall.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer wanted to create a believable realistic sound that people are abel to believe. the sound in this movie is so well connected to the visuals for example when Trinity or neo slow down the sound does the some thing the sound is slowed Down and stretched out for as long as the character is moving the sound is connected with the character, and this is what i think the character inteded to do he wanted to sound to be well connected with the visuals so that people would question the sound, it would juts be a normal thing

Kill Bill- gogo

What the sound is doing in the sequence?
the sound in this sequence is creating a strong film realism.
How the sound is doing this, refering to specific moments and specific sounds?
the sound is creating a strong film realism by the use of stretched out sound for example when uma jumps from table to table there is a stretched out ballon like sound it is not a sound that is we would hear in real life but because the sound in this film uses spatial placement and sound perspective the sound seem very really and believable.
Why you think the Director/Sound Designer wanted to create this particular effect?
I think the sound designer and director wanted to create this particular effect as to show and emphases the struggle that the bride is going through to get the revenge she so desperately seeks for example when the sword hits gogos meteor hammer the sound of the clash is a loud metal scraping sort of sound. The sound in this scenes are vicious, loud and bold and this sums up this film.
